Water scarcity impacts Huánuco and Huancavelica in Peru
Water scarcity is causing significant disruptions in several Peruvian regions. In Huánuco, the utility provider Seda Huánuco has implemented water restrictions in the areas of Amarilis and Pillco Marca. Following these cuts, the regulator Sunass demanded that the company implement contingency plans, such as using water tankers, to supply affected zones.
In the high Andean communities of Huancavelica, the water deficit is impacting livestock. Producers report that the lack of water is causing the deaths of alpaca and sheep offspring, threatening the primary livelihood and food security of local farming families. In response, the Regional Federation of Peasant Communities of Huancavelica (FERCAMH) has called for an emergency meeting to discuss budget management and urgent assistance for the affected communities.
