Water shortages in DRC complicate hygiene and health efforts
Persistent water shortages are impacting several regions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, creating significant health and hygiene challenges. In Lubumbashi, residents in various neighborhoods have faced a lack of potable water for nearly a month. This scarcity forces inhabitants to travel long distances or rely on private boreholes and unregulated sources, raising concerns about waterborne diseases like cholera, especially during periods of high heat.
In Butembo, the water crisis coincides with an Ebola outbreak, severely hindering prevention efforts. The lack of running water in households and schools makes regular handwashing—a primary defense against the virus—difficult to maintain. Humanitarian sources note that treating infected patients requires substantial water volumes for decontamination and hygiene, a demand that current supplies are struggling to meet. In some areas, the cost of purchasing water has become a financial burden for many families.
