Water shortages trigger protests in Nezahualcóyotl and Salvatierra

Water shortages and infrastructure failures are causing significant disruptions across different regions in Mexico. In Nezahualcóyotl, residents have organized at least six protests in 2026 due to persistent water scarcity. On August 21, demonstrators blocked Chimalhuacán Avenue to demand the restoration of regular service through the hydraulic network, claiming they had been without water for over a month. Protesters noted that official water trucks are insufficient, forcing some to rely on private providers.

In Salvatierra, Guanajuato, residents in several neighborhoods, including San Cristóbal and Lázaro Cárdenas, have faced up to three days without potable water. The shortage is attributed to an electrical failure at Pozo 4. Local citizens reported that their storage tanks are running empty and expressed frustration over a lack of official information regarding when service will be restored. While some water trucks have been deployed, residents claim the supply has not been enough to meet the community's needs.
