Water softeners reduce hardness in industrial processes

Water softening systems are becoming essential technical solutions for reducing water hardness and preventing scale buildup in industrial processes. By using cationic resins to remove calcium and magnesium ions, these systems protect boilers, cooling towers, and production lines that require low mineral concentrations.

A study by Unoesc conducted at a food industry in Santa Catarina demonstrated the effectiveness of this technology. The research found that average total hardness dropped from 20 mg/L before the softener to 3 mg/L at the boiler inlet, with a 100% regeneration efficiency during the evaluated cycle. The study also revealed that 77.19% of scale deposits found in piping were composed of accumulated calcium and magnesium, highlighting how uncontrolled hardness shortens equipment lifespan.

Nelson Isao Watanabe, founder of Asstefil Indústria e Comércio de Filtros Ltda., stated that hardness removal is decisive for preserving the performance of thermal systems and avoiding losses due to scaling. Beyond equipment protection, water softening helps reduce maintenance costs and energy consumption by preventing mineral deposits on heat exchange surfaces.
