Water shortages and infrastructure failures trigger protests in Mexico, Cuba, and Ecuador

Various regions are facing significant water supply disruptions due to infrastructure failures, maintenance, and political tensions.

In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a 20-inch pipe rupture caused by soil softening from recent rains has left 58 neighborhoods without service. SEAPAL Vallarta is working on repairs, with service expected to return gradually.

In Durán, Ecuador, an 800mm aqueduct failure has prompted protests. Emapad is conducting repairs and deploying water tankers to assist affected residents.

In Havana, Cuba, residents in Lawton blocked streets to protest water shortages. Aguas de La Habana attributed service interruptions to electrical system failures and maintenance at the Ariguanabo source.

In San Luis Potosí, Mexico, the Green Party (PVEM) has accused Mayor Enrique Galindo Ceballos of using his government report as a political platform for a 2027 gubernatorial bid while failing to address local water and security issues.
