Moldova faces water crisis amid severe hydrological drought
Moldova is facing a severe hydrological drought, prompting authorities to implement water conservation measures to ensure supply until autumn rains arrive. The Republic of Moldova has been under a 30-day hydrological alert status since July 28.
To preserve existing reserves, the Nistrean Commission decided to reduce the water discharge from the Novodnestrovsk reservoir from 85 to 75 cubic meters per second through the end of August. This decision follows a previous reduction from 100 to 85 cubic meters per second in late July. Environmental Minister Gheorghe Hajder noted that the reservoir level dropped by approximately one meter in July and another 25 centimeters in early August.
With approximately 80 percent of the Moldovan population relying on the Dniester River for water, officials are urging the public to reduce consumption. Long-term strategies being discussed include more efficient industrial and irrigation methods, reforestation, and improved water collection in reservoirs and public spaces.
