Peru floriculture sector supports 7,000 farmers across nine regions

The floriculture industry in Peru is a vital economic driver for rural areas, supporting over 7,000 small-scale farmers across nine regions, including Junín, Cajamarca, Huánuco, and Lima Provinces. According to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), the sector generates between 5 and 8 jobs per hectare, with women occupying more than 50% of these positions.

Key commercial species include gladioli, carnations, gypsophila, roses, hydrangeas, and chrysanthemums. Demand for these products peaks during significant dates such as September 21, marking the arrival of spring, and Valentine's Day. The National Institute of Quality (Inacal) is working to promote technical standards to regulate the production and commercialization of these cut flowers to ensure quality within the national market.
