Water Supply Suspended to Illegal Buildings in Maddalusa, Sicily
The Sicily Regional Assembly’s Commission on Territory and Environment reviewed the ongoing case of water supply suspension to illegal structures in the Maddalusa district of Agrigento. The buildings lie within the strictly protected archaeological park of the Valley of the Temples.
Michele Mallia, president of the local district committee, referred to a 2010 circular by former cultural heritage director Gesualdo Campo, which states that requests for building regularisation must be assessed by the municipality and cannot be automatically blocked by the Superintendency. Many applications have remained unresolved, creating a standoff between water cuts and pending demolition decisions. The commission is considering a legislative amendment to reduce the park’s perimeter and has set up a study group, postponing further debate to September.
