British Columbia regions report waste reduction and water restriction changes

Several British Columbia regions are reporting updates regarding environmental management and resource conservation.

In the North Okanagan, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) announced that waste disposal per resident has declined to 444 kilograms, the lowest level recorded since 1979. This downward trend continues for the fourth consecutive year despite regional population growth. The RDNO attributed the decrease to factors such as food waste prevention initiatives, commercial disposal regulations, and economic pressures influencing consumer behavior. The district's ultimate goal is to reach a target of 350 kilograms per person.

Concurrently, water management updates have been issued for other areas. The Comox Valley Regional District has lifted Stage 3 water restrictions for certain areas, reinstating Stage 2 restrictions for the Comox Valley Water System, Black Creek-Oyster Bay, and Union Bay. In Enderby, water restrictions have been downgraded from Stage 2 to Stage 1, allowing residents to water on designated even or odd days for up to two hours per day.
