Waterdrop rolls out AMARENA sour microdrink as Italy’s summer beverage trend gains steam
Waterdrop ® has introduced a limited‑edition microdrink called AMARENA, a cherry‑flavoured, sugar‑free powder enriched with vitamins B1, B3, B5, B6, B12 and vitamin C. The product is positioned within the growing “sour” trend that sees consumers shifting from sweet tropical flavours to a balance of sweet and sour, sometimes called “swour”. AMARENA can be mixed with water and sparkling water to create drinks such as the brand’s “Queen of Tarts” recipe, which adds pomegranate juice, fresh raspberries and lime.
The launch reflects a broader move in Italy and elsewhere toward less sugary, more savory non‑alcoholic drinks. Trend reports highlight combinations of seltz, lemon and a pinch of salt as a refreshing response to summer heat, drawing on traditional Indian and Mexican preparations. Examples include London‑based concept bars Jikoni, which serves lime with black salt and sparkling water, and Vesper, which uses coastal herbal distillates. The emerging preference for salty‑umami notes complements the sour‑centric offerings from Waterdrop, signalling a shift in consumer taste across the beverage market.
