Waterfalls in North Rhine-Westphalia offer summer excursion sites

North Rhine-Westphalia offers several waterfalls that serve as summer excursion destinations for families, often accompanied by hiking trails, cycling paths, and viewpoints.

Notable locations include the Siegfall near Windeck, which is the widest waterfall in the state at 84 meters. Originally created in the mid-19th century by engineers to compensate for changes in river gradient during the construction of the Deutz-Gießen railway, it is now a popular site. Nearby attractions include the eight-kilometer Mäanderweg hiking trail, which leads through a museum village to a castle ruin.

Other highlighted sites include the Plästerlegge natural monument and the waterfall located within Essen's Grugapark, situated near the botanical gardens and petting zoo.
