Waterford arson attack investigation: Four dead including two children

An An Garda Síochána murder investigation is underway following a suspected arson attack on a home in the Birchwood estate of Waterford City. The incident, which occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, resulted in the deaths of Philip English, Kim English, and their two children, 12-year-old Callum and 9-year-old Jayden.

Authorities believe the fire was deliberately started, possibly using a petrol bomb. Two other children, aged 14 and six, were rescued from the two-storey house and remain in critical condition at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) Crumlin.

John James English, the son of the deceased, claimed the family was targeted due to a 20,000 euro drug debt owed by someone else, asserting the family had no involvement in criminal activity. Detectives have conducted raids on the homes of two individuals suspected of involvement in the drug trade and have seized electronic devices and vehicles as part of the investigation. The Birch Avenue property remains a sealed crime scene for forensic examination.
