Waterloo Region explores improved snow clearing for bus stops

The Region of Waterloo is exploring new methods to improve transit accessibility during winter months by ensuring bus stops remain clear of snow. Following harsh winters that created challenges for Grand River Transit (GRT) users, transit officials are looking for ways to prevent riders from having to climb over snowbanks to access service.

Doug Spooner, Director of Transit Services, reported that including bus stop snow clearing in existing municipal maintenance agreements was not feasible due to equipment limitations. Consequently, the region plans to re-tender contracts with updated requirements. Proposed changes include pricing for 24-hour snow clearing and implementing an incentive and penalty program to ensure contractor performance.

Councillor Matt Rodrigues expressed disappointment regarding the inability to update municipal agreements and supported the move toward a system that uses both incentives and penalties to guarantee service reliability.
