Watermelon and Mulberry Health Risks Highlighted in Croatia and Slovenia

Health experts in Croatia note that while watermelon is rich in water, vitamins A and C and the antioxidant lycopene, excessive consumption can cause digestive discomfort such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain or diarrhea, especially in people with irritable bowel syndrome or other sensitive gut conditions. Its high fructose content and high glycemic index also mean diabetics should limit portion sizes to avoid rapid spikes in blood glucose.

In Slovenia, reports on mulberry emphasize its nutritional value – vitamins C, A, E, K and B, as well as minerals like iron, potassium, magnesium and manganese, plus dietary fiber and antioxidants. The fruit and its leaves are used in traditional remedies for cough, sore throat and digestive issues, and emerging research suggests leaf extracts may help moderate post‑meal blood‑sugar rises. Scientists caution that supplements cannot replace a balanced diet or medical treatment.
