Wave Sentinel Arrives in Guaranao, Venezuela to Repair Submarine Internet Cable

The specialized repair vessel Wave Sentinel docked at the port of Guaranao in Venezuela's Falcón state on 17 July. The ship anchored at 9:30 a.m. and began customs procedures to enable the deployment of its technical crew, a submarine robot and laser‑fusion equipment for the repair of a damaged subsea fiber‑optic cable.

The cable rupture was caused by the June 24 earthquakes that disrupted Venezuela’s international internet link. Authorities, including the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), accelerated the normally 45‑day regulatory process to just 14 days. Once customs clearance is completed, the vessel will position the robot at roughly 1,800 m depth to inspect the seabed, splice the fiber and restore full connectivity. Until repairs are finished, users may experience intermittent service, reduced speeds and higher latency.
