Waverley Council removes Gaza-related book from Sydney library shelves

The Waverley Council in Sydney, Australia, has removed the book ‘How to Sell a Genocide: The Media’s Complicity in the Destruction of Gaza’ from its library shelves pending a review. The decision followed multiple complaints, including one from a survivor of the Bondi Beach massacre who described the book's prominent display as ‘deeply insensitive.’

Author Adam Johnson has defended the publication, arguing that the removal and subsequent media coverage demonstrate how defenders of Palestine are often smeared in mainstream media. Nasser Mashni, president of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network, stated that libraries have a duty to provide access to a broad range of works, including those that may cause discomfort.

The book provides a critique of how United States mainstream media shapes public perception regarding the war in Gaza. While the council reviews the title, debates continue regarding the role of public libraries in providing access to controversial non-fiction works versus the need to respect community sensitivities.
