Way Kambas conflict mitigation project reaches 82 percent completion

The human-elephant conflict mitigation project in Way Kambas National Park, East Lampung, has reached 82 percent completion. The infrastructure project, which has a budget of Rp850 billion, aims to reduce interactions between elephants and local communities.

While residents of Sukorahayu Village support the development, they have raised concerns regarding access to their farmland. Farmers fear the embankments will obstruct the movement of agricultural machinery, such as hand tractors, to fields located near the riverbanks.

Village Head Apria Sahdi stated that a “win-win solution” is being discussed, which may include installing access gates in the embankments to allow machinery through. Additionally, Brigjen Sriyanto, Chairman of the Way Kambas Elephant Interaction Mitigation Commission, noted that technical challenges remain, including unstable soil conditions in certain areas that require further stages of work.
