Way Kambas National Park fires contained after TNI airborne operation

Authorities have successfully contained recent forest fires within the Way Kambas National Park in Lampung, Indonesia. Recent drone monitoring on August 29, 2026, confirmed that no active fire hotspots remain in the previously affected areas.

To combat the fires in difficult-to-reach terrain, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) deployed the Alfa Team, a specialized airborne unit. The operation utilized thermal drones equipped with infrared cameras to identify heat anomalies, allowing paratroopers to jump directly into coordinates where small embers could be extinguished before spreading.

Despite the fires being declared extinguished, personnel are remaining on-site to conduct mop-up operations and early detection patrols. Some officers are camping within the forest to ensure that no smoldering embers reignite, as previous fire outbreaks in the park had recurred after initial suppression efforts.
