Way Kambas National Park wildfire extinguished in Lampung
A wildfire in the Way Kambas National Park in Lampung, Indonesia, was successfully extinguished on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time. The fire, which began on Friday, August 21, in the Kuala Penet resort area, affected an estimated 673.4 hectares of land.
Firefighting operations involved approximately 200 to 250 joint personnel from various agencies, including the Lampung Regional Police, the military, and local volunteers. Responders faced significant challenges due to the peatland terrain, limited vehicle access, and distant water sources, requiring some personnel to reach the fire on foot. Strong winds and dry conditions also complicated containment efforts.
The Ministry of Forestry confirmed that Sumatran elephants in both their natural habitat and at the Elephant Conservation Center remained unaffected, as the herds were located far from the blaze. Following the extinguishment, teams conducted cooling operations and monitoring to prevent reignition in the peatlands. Authorities are also investigating whether the fire was caused intentionally, including potential links to illegal hunting activities.
