Way Out West festival implements battery storage for energy efficiency

The Way Out West music festival in Gothenburg has implemented new battery solutions to manage power peaks and ensure electricity supply for its main stages. This marks a shift for the event, which has prioritized sustainability since its inception in 2007.

To avoid using diesel generators, the festival utilized five batteries with a combined capacity of approximately 1,000 kWh. Vattenfall, the energy provider, noted that using fossil-free electricity from wind power combined with battery storage makes the energy solution more robust and resource-efficient.

Marcus Melin, a strategic energy advisor at Vattenfall, indicated that while there is growing interest among property owners in using batteries for spot price optimization and grid support, widespread adoption in residential buildings is not yet imminent. He noted that batteries offer significant flexibility, allowing for the storage of solar energy and the management of electric vehicle charging.
