Waymo launches transit rewards program in San Francisco Bay Area

Waymo has announced a new transit rewards program designed to encourage riders to combine robotaxi trips with public transportation. Currently available to Waymo employees in the San Francisco Bay Area, the program will expand to the general public in the region in several weeks.

To participate, riders must link a Visa credit or debit card to the Waymo app. If a user takes a Waymo trip and uses public transit within two hours of each other using their Visa card, they will receive $2.85 in ‘Waymo Cash’—the equivalent of a San Francisco bus fare—to be used for future rides. Over two dozen transit agencies in the Bay Area are participating in the initiative.

Additionally, Waymo is leasing 40 parking spots at Caltrain commuter stations to station vehicles for easy rider access. San José Mayor Matt Mahan expressed support for the partnership, stating that the technology aims to strengthen rather than replace public transit by making regional travel more seamless.
