Waymo robotaxi enters oncoming traffic in Tampa
A Waymo driverless taxi caused a disruption in Tampa, Florida, after failing to recognize temporary traffic changes following a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game. On October 4, police had converted all lanes on North Himes Avenue near Raymond James Stadium to southbound traffic to manage crowds.
The Waymo vehicle reportedly sat waiting for approximately 30 minutes before attempting to turn northbound, driving directly into oncoming traffic. Passengers recorded video of other vehicles swerving to avoid the robotaxi before it came to a stop in the roadway. The passengers ultimately exited the vehicle and completed their journey via Uber.
Waymo acknowledged the incident, stating the vehicle briefly entered a temporary one-way street. The company is reviewing the event and has issued a refund for the fare.
