Germany announces fuel relief and gas storage measures FAST-MOVING

Germany is facing rising fuel costs and energy security concerns. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that the government will implement financial relief for consumers to combat high fuel prices, which have seen Super E10 reach approximately 2.286 euros per liter and diesel reach around 2.44 euros per liter.

Political discussions regarding relief measures include the SPD's proposal for a fuel price cap based on the Belgian model and CDU politician Thorsten Frei's suggestion to temporarily reduce VAT on fuel. Economy Minister Katherina Reiche has also proposed targeted direct payments to low-income earners.

Simultaneously, Germany's gas storage levels are at a concerning 56 percent capacity, significantly lower than the previous year. To mitigate the risk of winter shortages, Minister Reiche has instructed state-owned energy companies Sefe and Uniper to take measures to increase storage levels, aiming to reach levels closer to the legal target of 80 percent.
