Wayne Bennett criticizes NRL video review system

South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has criticized the NRL’s video review system, known as the ‘bunker’, following his team’s 20-10 elimination final loss to the Newcastle Knights at Allianz Stadium.

Bennett expressed frustration over inconsistent officiating, specifically citing a decision where on-field referee Ashley Klein’s try award for Jayden Sullivan was overruled by bunker official Chris Butler. He contrasted this with a later decision where a Newcastle try was upheld despite appearing to touch the touchline. Bennett questioned the authority of the system, asking, “I want to know who’s refereeing the game. Is it the bunker, or is it the referee?”

In addition to officiating inconsistencies, Bennett described lengthy review delays as a detriment to the game’s television appeal. He advocated for decisions to be left to the on-field referee, stating, “I’m happy to live with the referee’s call. Always have been. Always will be.”

The match was also marked by injuries for the Rabbitohs, as veteran five-eighth Cody Walker suffered a calf injury and winger Alex Johnston dealt with a groin problem.
