Wayne Rooney rejects 2012 title if City is stripped of honors
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has stated he would not accept a Premier League winner’s medal for the 2011/12 season, even if Manchester City were stripped of their titles. This comes after the Premier League found Manchester City guilty of 114 of 115 alleged financial rule breaches.
Rooney’s stance contrasts with former teammates Rio Ferdinand and David de Gea, who have suggested that Manchester United should be retrospectively awarded the 2011/12 title. Rooney argued that United did not do enough to earn the championship that year, noting the team surrendered a significant lead late in the season.
While Rooney supports severe sanctions for City, including potential relegation, he expressed empathy for the current City players, suggesting they likely had no knowledge of the administrative breaches. He emphasized that he is satisfied with the five league titles he won legitimately and would feel uncomfortable receiving a trophy that was not won on the pitch.
