Wayne Rooney reveals potential transfer to FC Barcelona
Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that a transfer to FC Barcelona was a real possibility during his career. Speaking in an interview with ‘The United Stand’, Rooney expressed a strong desire to have played for the Catalan club, particularly during the era managed by Pep Guardiola.
Rooney noted that following the 2010/11 season, when Barcelona defeated Manchester United in the Champions League final, there was an opening for a striker as the team lacked a traditional number nine. He believed his playing style would have integrated perfectly into Guardiola’s system.
Despite the potential move, the transfer did not materialize due to financial constraints at Barcelona. Rooney stated, “There was a small possibility of signing for Barcelona, but I think, economically, it was difficult for them.” Ultimately, Barcelona pursued other options, such as David Villa, while Rooney remained at Manchester United, where he became the club's top scorer with 253 goals.
