Wayve and Uber receive TfL licences for autonomous vehicles in London

Transport for London (TfL) has granted Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) licences to a fleet of autonomous all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles developed by Wayve. This licensing milestone allows Uber and Wayve to move forward with their partnership to provide autonomous rides in London.

The vehicles are equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver technology, along with specialized cameras and radar. To comply with safety regulations, each trip will include a trained and TfL-licensed private hire driver onboard to oversee the journey and take control if necessary. This arrangement fulfills the ‘triple-lock’ requirement, ensuring the operator, driver, and vehicle are all licensed by the same authority.

Uber reports significant public interest, with over 100,000 Londoners signing up for an interest list. Select riders from this list will be granted access to Wayve rides later this summer to provide feedback before a full public launch.
