Waze police alerts significantly reduce speeding in Australian study

A study conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast has found that drivers significantly reduce their speed when receiving police enforcement alerts via the Waze navigation app. Researchers monitored 9,052 vehicles across 33 different sites in southeast Queensland, Australia, including residential streets, highways, and school zones.

Data showed that the proportion of speeding vehicles dropped from approximately 54.8% to 25.8% following an alert. On average, vehicle speeds fell by about 5 kilometers per hour (roughly 3 mph) once a warning appeared. The study noted that while speeds dropped at all locations, the response in active school zones was comparatively weaker.

Dr. Levi Anderson, the study's author, noted that while the alerts effectively change behavior at specific locations, they raise questions regarding long-term road safety. Criminology theory suggests that if drivers use these alerts primarily to avoid detection rather than to respect speed limits, they may feel more comfortable speeding in areas where no alerts are present.
