WBO orders Jacob Bank to fight Zhanibek Alimkhanuly for vacant title
The WBO has ordered Jacob Bank to fight Zhanibek Alimkhanuly for the vacant super middleweight world title. WBO President Gustavo Olivieri identified Bank as the first available contender for the bout. The two sides have 15 days to reach a contractual agreement; if they fail, a purse bid will be initiated to settle the fight.
This development follows the decision by Hamzah Sheeraz to voluntarily relinquish his WBO super middleweight championship. Sheeraz withdrew from a mandatory bout against Alimkhanuly after his promoters, Queensberry Promotions, won a purse bid for the match with a $1,001,809 offer. The WBO is expected to rule on the status of the division on September 21.
While Diego Pacheco holds the number two ranking in the division, he is currently scheduled to face Darius Fulghum on November 14. The WBO has not provided specific reasons for why Pacheco was not selected for the immediate title opportunity over Bank.
