WDODelta initiates nature and water quality projects in the Netherlands

Waterschap Drents Overijsselse Delta (WDODelta) is launching several ecological projects in the Netherlands to improve water quality and biodiversity.

In the Meppelerdiep area between Meppel and Zwartsluis, WDODelta is partnering with Natuurmonumenten to redesign a marsh zone within the Natura 2000 De Wieden area. The project involves excavating parts of the bank and creating two open connections to the Meppelerdiep to improve water flow and create a more natural water level. A new water barrier will also be constructed on the west side to protect adjacent lands. These works are expected to be completed by late November.

Additionally, WDODelta will begin work on the Nieuwe Wetering near Broekland and Laag Zuthem starting October 1. This project includes the construction of over ten kilometers of nature-friendly banks to create gradual transitions between land and water. The initiative also aims to improve fish migration by adjusting two weirs and widening watercourses in certain locations. This project is scheduled to continue until April 2027.
