Wealth gap widens between Europe and Africa's top billionaires

A significant wealth gap exists between Europe and Africa's wealthiest individuals. According to Forbes 2026 rankings, Europe’s top 10 billionaires command an estimated $801.7 billion, which is approximately eight times the $100.2 billion held by Africa’s 10 richest individuals.

In Europe, Bernard Arnault and family lead with a $171 billion valuation through LVMH. Amancio Ortega of Inditex follows with $148 billion. Notably, Arnault’s personal fortune alone exceeds the combined wealth of all 23 African billionaires by roughly $44.3 billion.

In Africa, Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote remains the continent's wealthiest person, though his fortune is significantly smaller than Europe's top tier. Meanwhile, some African business leaders are undergoing leadership transitions. Tony Elumelu recently concluded a 12-year tenure as chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) due to regulatory term limits set by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
