Wealth management trends focus on family offices and inheritance communication
The concept of the family office, traditionally reserved for ultra-high-net-worth dynasties like the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts, is becoming more accessible to a broader range of clients through firms like Mercer Advisors. Historically, these private organizations provided integrated management of investments, taxes, and estate planning to ensure multi-generational continuity.
As the United States approaches the ‘Great Wealth Transfer’—projected by Cerulli Associates to reach $124 trillion through 2048—challenges regarding communication and inheritance are emerging. Many wealthy parents struggle to discuss finances with their children. A Fidelity study indicates that over half of parents with at least $500,000 in investable assets have not communicated their net worth to their heirs, and 68% have not disclosed specific inheritance details. Experts suggest that while families often prepare legal documentation, they frequently fail to prepare the heirs themselves to manage significant wealth.
