Wear It Purple Day celebrates LGBTQIA+ youth

Wear It Purple Day is being observed on the last Friday of August to support and celebrate LGBTQIA+SB young people. The initiative encourages individuals to wear purple at workplaces, schools, and community organizations as a visible sign of acceptance, diversity, and inclusion.

Founded in 2010, the awareness day was established in response to rising teenage suicide rates linked to bullying and a lack of acceptance regarding sexuality or gender identity. This year’s theme, ‘Colours of Courage’, highlights the bravery shown by LGBTQIA+ youth, their families, and their allies in living authentically and speaking out against discrimination.

In Australia, the day serves as a way to combat the isolation felt by young people and to provide a sense of belonging. Participants are encouraged to share their support on social media to spread messages of affirmation and hope.
