Wearable technology advances in biometric and sleep research
Recent research highlights the growing role of wearable technology in validating health ingredients and improving biometric accuracy.
Biotech company Nuritas announced the publication of a peer-reviewed pilot study in 'Sleep Medicine: X' regarding its sleep ingredient, PeptiSleep™. The study utilized the Oura Ring to track over 15 biometrics, such as heart rate variability and sleep architecture, in real-world home settings. This approach aims to move sleep research away from traditional laboratory-based polysomnography toward continuous, non-invasive, and passive monitoring via consumer wearables.
In a separate study published in 'npj Digital Medicine', a research team including Ninenovo (the parent company of RingConn), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Mianyang Central Hospital analyzed nearly 98,000 PPG samples from 1,810 participants. The research focused on bilateral cardiovascular monitoring using smart rings. The findings suggest that synchronizing PPG signals from both hands can significantly improve heart rate estimation, though the study also identified limitations in using bilateral wearable data for blood pressure estimation.
