Wearable technology shifts toward sweat-based biosensing
The evolution of wearable technology is moving beyond light-based sensors, which currently measure metrics such as heart rate, ECG, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels. While these sensors have advanced significantly, they face limitations in performing biochemical analysis.
Researchers are looking toward sweat as a primary medium for the next generation of biosensing. Utilizing microfluidics to create miniature laboratories, scientists aim to analyze fluids for deeper health insights. Notable developments include a skin patch from Caltech researchers capable of measuring cholesterol levels via sweat, as well as similar work conducted by Pennsylvania State University and UC San Diego. The current engineering challenge lies in miniaturizing this complex sensing technology to fit into continuous monitoring devices like smart rings.
