Texas Governor Abbott declares disaster for El Paso County
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a state disaster declaration for El Paso County following severe flooding that has impacted several areas, including Northwest El Paso and Horizon City. The declaration aims to ensure that the full resources of the State of Texas are available to support local response and recovery efforts.
The state action follows a local disaster declaration previously issued by El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego. Reports indicate that at least 60 homes have been affected by the heavy rainfall, with some families forced to evacuate. Local authorities and community organizations are working to connect affected residents with essential resources, including emergency shelter, clothing, and financial assistance.
Governor Abbott made the announcement during a campaign rally in West El Paso. The flooding has caused significant disruptions, including inundated roadways such as US 54 and residential streets, posing risks to motorists. The National Weather Service has warned that additional heavy rain and thunderstorms may continue to affect the region through the weekend.
