São Paulo issued red alert for intense heat wave

The Civil Defense of São Paulo has issued a red alert for several regions due to an intense heat wave expected to last from Thursday, August 13, to Wednesday, August 19. A mass of hot, dry air is driving temperatures significantly above seasonal averages.

In the northern, northwestern, and western regions—including Presidente Prudente, Araçatuba, São José do Rio Preto, Barretos, Franca, and Ribeirão Preto—temperatures may rise up to 7°C above the average, with peaks reaching approximately 40°C. In the Greater São Paulo area, Marília, Bauru, Campinas, and other municipalities, temperatures are expected to be 3°C to 5°C above normal.

The dry air mass is also causing critically low humidity levels, which may drop below 30% in the extreme north of the state. This poses health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Additionally, the combination of high heat and low humidity has significantly increased the risk of forest fires. Authorities advise the population to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and refrain from any activities that could trigger fires, such as burning vegetation or discarding cigarette butts in dry areas.
