Hungary records hottest August since 1901 amid shifting weather patterns

Hungary experienced its hottest August since records began in 1901, with an average temperature of 24.9°C, which is 3.7°C above the 1991–2020 average. The month was also notably dry, receiving only 15.6 mm of precipitation, roughly 74% less than the long-term average.

Weather forecasts indicate a significant seasonal transition is approaching. While the first week of September continues to see summer-like heat with temperatures reaching up to 37°C, a major cold front is expected to arrive by mid-September. This front is predicted to bring increased cloud cover, showers, thunderstorms, and a substantial drop in temperatures, potentially reaching 16-24°C in some areas.

In Slovakia, seasonal models suggest a milder and wetter winter for 2026/2027, influenced by the Super El Niño phenomenon and unusually warm Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea temperatures. While increased moisture may lead to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, it does not necessarily guarantee more snow, as higher temperatures may result in rain instead of snow in lower elevations.

Additionally, health officials are monitoring the West Nile virus, which remains present in Europe. While most infections are asymptomatic, the virus can cause neurological complications in vulnerable populations.
