Weather extremes in Norway linked to potential psychological impacts

Disappointing summer weather in Norway, characterized by cold, wet conditions in some regions and extreme heat in others, may have lasting psychological effects on residents as they transition into autumn.

Hans M. Nordahl, a professor of medical behavioral sciences at NTNU, notes that cold and wet weather in July can cause disappointment by limiting activities and altering plans. Conversely, extreme heatwaves can lead to physical inactivity and sleep disruption due to high nighttime temperatures. Both extremes can result in reduced social interaction and physical activity.

State meteorologist Charalampos Sarchosidis of the Meteorological Institute highlights significant regional contrasts. For instance, Bergen has experienced continuous rainfall since July 24, with total precipitation exceeding Oslo’s entire 2026 rainfall. In some areas, single-day rainfall totals have surpassed the annual averages of other regions.
