Turkey and Greece face intense heatwaves and high fire risks

Turkey and Greece are facing significant weather shifts, characterized by intense heatwaves and varying precipitation patterns.

In Turkey, a heatwave is expected to peak around August 22, with temperatures in eastern and southeastern Anatolia potentially exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. Experts note that temperatures in western and southern regions will rise 2 to 4 degrees above seasonal norms, while central areas will see increases of 1 to 3 degrees. Additionally, strong winds of 30-50 km/h are forecasted for eastern Marmara and southeastern East Anatolia. In contrast, local showers and thunderstorms are expected in the inland areas of Giresun.

Greece is also entering a prolonged heatwave, with meteorologists predicting temperatures could reach or exceed 40 degrees Celsius in several regions over the coming weekend. This heatwave is expected to last between seven and eight days, with some models suggesting temperatures could hit 42 degrees Celsius in vulnerable areas. The combination of high temperatures, increased humidity, and existing drought conditions has also led to a high fire risk (category 3) in the Preveza regional unit, prompting local authorities to restrict movement in certain forested areas from sunset to sunrise.
