Catalonia weather alerts issued amid heavy rain and flooding

Catalonia is facing severe weather conditions as heavy rainfall, storms, and potential hail trigger the INUNCAT emergency plan for floods. Authorities have issued warnings for multiple regions, particularly in the Pyrenees, Lleida, and Tarragona, where rainfall intensity could exceed 40 liters per square meter in 30 minutes.

Following recent torrential rains that caused flooding in municipalities such as El Vendrell and Roda de Berà, a controversy has emerged regarding the activation of the ES-Alert mobile notification system. Government officials, including Justice Minister Ramon Espadaler, stated that the alert was not triggered because the meteorological risk level was at 4 out of 6, whereas the system is typically reserved for levels 5 or 6. Local leaders noted that the rainfall significantly exceeded forecasts, causing damage and injuries.

Forecasts indicate continued instability due to an Atlantic front, bringing more intense precipitation to the northwest and central parts of the region. Civil Protection advises caution regarding mobility and outdoor activities during these storm episodes.
