Guaymas and Empalme face severe flooding in Sonora

Heavy rainfall in the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa has caused significant flooding and loss of life. In Guaymas and Empalme, Sonora, intense storms resulted in at least two deaths after individuals were swept away by currents while in a vehicle in the Misión del Sol neighborhood.

Authorities reported that rainfall in Guaymas reached approximately 120 millimeters in just 45 minutes. The flooding damaged infrastructure, including six high-voltage power poles, and affected several homes, specifically in the Mirador neighborhood where water levels reached 10 centimeters.

In response, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño activated an interinstitutional emergency operation involving the Mexican Navy, National Guard, Mexican Army, and State Public Security Police. The Mexican Navy has also activated Plan Marina to support the affected population. The Centro de Desarrollo de Fátima has been opened as a temporary shelter for displaced families.
