Web analytics evolution focuses on event-based tracking

Modern web analytics, particularly within Google Analytics 4 (GA4), has shifted to a model where almost every user interaction is classified as an event. Unlike previous versions that utilized separate categories for pageviews and sessions, GA4 flattens these into a single event-based structure. This includes automatically collected events like session starts, enhanced measurement events such as scrolls and outbound clicks, recommended events for specific industries, and custom events defined by the user.

Effective analytics integration requires careful planning regarding tracking identities and data structure. A tracking ID is essential to ensure data is routed to the correct project or website, distinguishing it from API keys used for secure, privileged operations. Successful implementation focuses on creating systems that are lightweight, secure, and provide actionable utility for product teams.
