Web maintenance tools face limitations in detecting mixed content security issues

New developments in web maintenance tools highlight the limitations of traditional broken-link checkers. A specialized link audit package for Craft CMS 5 has been introduced to improve efficiency by tracking unique URLs rather than performing repetitive page-by-page scans. This method prevents server blocking and provides more accurate reporting by distinguishing between truly broken links and hosts that block automated requests.

However, technical analysis suggests that standard status-code checks may fail to identify critical security issues such as mixed content. While a link checker may report a successful 200 OK status, a resource loaded via HTTP on an HTTPS page can still cause a browser to block the content or display a ‘Not fully secure’ warning. This gap means that a link can be technically functional but still break the security integrity and visual rendering of a webpage.
