WebAIM Million report shows 96% of home pages lack basic accessibility

The latest WebAIM Million report, an automated evaluation of the top one million home pages, reveals that 96.3% of websites still contain easily detectable Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) failures. This represents only a 1.5% decrease in accessibility errors over the last four years.

Most errors fall into six specific categories: low contrast text, missing alternative text for images, empty links, missing form input labels, empty buttons, and missing document language. Additionally, while the use of Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) has increased, websites utilizing ARIA are more likely to be inaccessible.

Despite accessibility principles being established since the release of WCAG 1.0 in 1999, the vast majority of home pages fail to meet basic standards. The report highlights a need for better education, actionable feedback, and more effective strategies to address these long-standing digital barriers.
