Webb Telescope's Little Red Dots and 1998 SH2 Dark Comet Reveal New Cosmic Phenomena
A team at Kyoto University analyzed the numerous tiny, highly red‑shifted galaxies discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope, dubbed “Little Red Dots.” Their study proposes that many of these galaxies host growing super‑massive black holes surrounded by dense gas, creating conditions that generate high‑energy neutrinos capable of reaching Earth. The researchers argue that these objects could account for a significant portion of the diffuse neutrino background that has puzzled scientists for years.
Separately, the object once catalogued as asteroid 1998 SH2 was re‑examined after its trajectory deviated from predictions in mid‑2025. Observations from Brazil, Chile and Hawaii revealed a faint coma and a narrow dust tail, indicating comet‑like outgassing. Scientists now classify it as a “dark comet,” a potentially hazardous class of bodies whose unpredictable motion could raise impact risk. The finding also bears on theories of early water delivery to Earth and may help interpret activity seen in the first interstellar visitor to the Solar System.
