WebRTC development focuses on signalling standards and SDP negotiation

WebRTC development is seeing advancements in standardization and technical clarity regarding media communication. The IETF WebRTC Ingest Signalling over HTTPS (WISH) workgroup is developing two key specifications: the WebRTC-HTTP Ingestion protocol (WHIP) and the WebRTC-HTTP Egress Protocol (WHEP).

WHIP facilitates sending media to a server for ingestion into live streams or calls, while WHEP allows clients to consume WebRTC streams using HTTP signalling. These standards aim to improve interoperability and allow developers to focus on applications rather than custom signalling mechanisms.

Technical challenges remain regarding Session Description Protocol (SDP) renegotiation. Developers often encounter errors during processes like screen sharing or ICE restarts due to strict rules governing the order of media sections (m-lines). Maintaining the correct order of media sections in an answer to match the initial offer is critical to preventing negotiation failures.
