Webuild named preferred bidder for Zambia railway project

Webuild has been named the preferred bidder for Lot 1B of the Lobito Corridor Railway Project in Zambia. The project involves constructing a 517-kilometer railway line that will run from the Angolan border to Chingola in the Copperbelt province. This segment is part of a larger 830-kilometer network designed to connect Zambia to the Angolan port of Lobito on the Atlantic coast.

The infrastructure project, which includes 22 bridges and viaducts, 8 stations, and 3 maintenance depots, is a strategic initiative under the Italian government's Mattei Plan for Africa. The project is promoted and developed by the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) in coordination with the governments of Angola and Zambia.

Webuild will lead an international consortium that includes the Turkish company İçtaş (30% stake) and the Portuguese company Mota-Engil (30% stake). Once completed, the railway is expected to reduce freight transport times from the Copperbelt to international markets from 16 days to 7 days, with estimated economic benefits of USD 3 billion for Zambia and Angola.
