Webuild signs $2.7 bn contract for Toronto’s Ontario Line underground tunnel

Italian construction group Webuild announced the signing of a US$2.7 billion contract to build the Pape tunnel and underground stations (Ptus) segment of Toronto’s Ontario Line. The contract, awarded to a 50‑50 joint venture with FCC, is backed by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario and covers two parallel tunnels about 3 km long, two new underground stations and a link to the city’s existing Line 2. The Ontario Line will span 15.6 km, include 15 stations and more than 40 connections, aiming to cut end‑to‑end travel time to under 30 minutes. The project will be delivered under a progressive design‑and‑build model to manage technical complexity and cost certainty. Webuild highlighted the contract as a key step in expanding its presence in the Canadian market, alongside work on the Hazel McCallion light‑rail line between Mississauga and Brampton.
