WEC seal rescue center raises 1.1 million euros in emergency fundraising
The WEC seal rescue center in Lauwersoog has raised 1.1 million euros through donations to combat an imminent bankruptcy. While the fundraising provides some hope, the center requires at least 2.8 million euros to avert financial collapse. A petition against the center's closure has garnered 73,000 signatures.
The situation has reached national political attention. During a parliamentary debate on animal welfare, Ines Kostic of the Party for the Animals called on the government to help preserve the rescue center, citing state responsibility for animals in need. State Secretary Silvio Erkens did not rule out government support and indicated a willingness to investigate potential assistance from the national government in consultation with involved parties.
As Europe's largest seal hospital, the center provides specialized medical care for 150 to 200 sick, injured, or weakened seals annually, often due to human activity. The facility notes there is no alternative that can fully replace its specialized services.
